Memorial University of Newfoundland, commonly referred to as Memorial University or MUN, is a public research university located in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The main campus is situated in St. John’s, with additional satellite campuses in Corner Brook, various locations across Newfoundland and Labrador, Saint Pierre, and Harlow, England. The university offers a wide range of educational programs, including certificate, diploma, undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs. Additionally, MUN provides online courses and degrees to cater to diverse educational needs.
Memorial University has a rich history that dates back to its founding as Memorial University College (MUC) in September 1925. It was established to pay tribute to the individuals who lost their lives in World War I, as well as to address the need for local education. Initially, MUC aimed to train teachers for religious schools and provide higher education opportunities within the dominion, as students previously had to seek post-secondary education in Canada, the United Kingdom, or the United States due to the absence of a locally available high-ranking institution. The original campus on Parade Street in St. John’s was established with assistance from a grant provided by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
