Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) is a private Mennonite university located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. It has historical and denominational affiliations with the Mennonite Church Canada and the Mennonite Brethren Church of Manitoba.
CMU was officially chartered in 1999, resulting from the amalgamation of several existing institutions. These included Canadian Mennonite Bible College, founded in 1947, Concord College (originally established as Mennonite Brethren Bible College in 1944), and Menno Simons College, established in 1988. While Steinbach Bible College was initially part of the merger, it later withdrew from the process.
The university adopted the name Canadian Mennonite University in the early 2000s, and classes began on the new campus in September of that year. This new campus combined the location of Canadian Mennonite Bible College on the southwest corner of Grant and Shaftesbury with the former campus of the Manitoba School for the Deaf.
CMU continued to expand and develop its facilities. In 2009, the university opened a new Menno Simons College campus on Portage Avenue. Additionally, a science laboratory was constructed, and in 2011, the Redekop School of Business was opened. CMU’s growth reflects its commitment to offering a diverse range of academic programs while maintaining its connections to Mennonite denominations and traditions.
