In terms of its history, the journey began in 1993 when the University of Wollongong in Australia inaugurated the Institute of Australian Studies (IAS) in the UAE. This marked the university as the first foreign institution to establish a campus in the UAE and the initial Australian tertiary institution to have a presence in the GCC. Initially offering English language programs, IAS evolved into a ‘feeder college’ by 1995, enabling students to complete part of their Business or IT degree in Dubai before continuing their studies in Australia. In 1999, it became the first foreign-owned institution globally to receive a license from the Federal Government of the United Arab Emirates. Subsequently, it was officially inaugurated as the University of Wollongong, Dubai Campus in October 2000 and was officially incorporated as the University of Wollongong in Dubai in 2004.
