Highlights:

  • Indians received the most UK study visas in 2023, accounting for nearly a third of all grants.
  • The number of Indian students pursuing UK study visas increased by 54% compared to 2022.
  • The UK’s post-study work visa scheme is a major factor driving the surge in Indian applicants.

Indians have once again emerged as the leading nationality for UK study visas, securing a remarkable 142,848 visas in 2023, a significant 54% increase from the previous year. This surge in Indian students pursuing higher education in the UK highlights the enduring appeal of British universities and the attractiveness of the UK’s post-study work visa scheme.

Indian students received the most study visas in 2022/2023, followed by their Chinese counterparts, as the total number of visas granted to main applicants rose by 2% overall, according to the UK government.

India’s dominance in the UK study visa market is evident in the latest figures released by the UK Home Office. Indian nationals accounted for nearly a third of all sponsored study visas granted in 2023, a clear indication of the country’s strong interest in British education. This remarkable growth is attributed to several factors, including the UK’s reputation for world-class universities, the diverse range of courses offered, and the availability of scholarships and financial aid.

Home secretary James Cleverly reportedly said the figures are a “testament to both our world-leading university sector and our ability to use our immigration system to prioritise the skills we need”.

Harry Anderson, assistant director for policy and global engagement at Universities UK International, said, “In any debate about international student numbers and figures, it is important first and foremost we recognise the vast contribution international students make to the UK; not just economically, but culturally and socially to towns and cities across the UK.

The continued dominance of Indian students in the UK study visa market reflects the strong demand for British education and the attractiveness of the UK’s post-study work visa scheme. This trend is likely to continue, with India remaining a key source of international students for UK universities.
